Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has issued a recall affecting more than 29,000 Freightliner and Western Star trucks due to potential issues with the steer axle wheels. The recall concerns several models from the 2023-2024 production years, including the Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, 122SD, Business Class M2, Cascadia, and Western Star 57X (Land Line) (HDT Trucking).
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the inboard bead seat flange of the steer axle wheels might crack. If these cracks go unnoticed and worsen, they can lead to the separation of wheel flange sections, potentially resulting in tire damage and loss of vehicle control, thereby increasing the risk of accidents (Land Line) (HDT Trucking).
The affected trucks are equipped with ULA18x aluminum wheels manufactured at Alcoa’s facility in Mexico between September 1, 2022, and July 20, 2023. This issue was identified through 15 field reports and 23 warranty claims, although no accidents or injuries have been reported so far (Land Line) (HDT Trucking).
DTNA is currently developing a remedy for this defect. Owners of the affected trucks will receive recall notification letters by June 2, 2024, and repairs will be conducted free of charge at authorized service facilities. In the meantime, vehicle owners are advised to inspect for signs of cracks or flange separation during pre-trip or post-trip inspections and monitor tire pressure via the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) (GovFleet) (Land Line).
For more information or assistance, truck owners can contact DTNA customer service or refer to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for additional guidance (Land Line) (HDT Trucking).
